STOP! Take a break!

26 Jul

Have you ever felt like this?

You wake up in the early hours of the morning in attempt to yet again cram in as much into one day as possible, work flat out in your non-contracted 12 hour shift, leave work, pick up an unhealthy bite, deceive your mind into believing it has full focus and concentration for the next after-work endeavour, work for a few more hours, get to bed in the early hours of the morning only for the cycle to repeat itself again. If you have ever had a dissertation to complete, new business venture to get up and running or extra-curricular activity to pursue, you can probably relate to the above.

Now if you’re like me you’ll probably convince yourself into thinking that continuing at such a ridiculous pace is justifiable because of motivational mantras such as, “I am still young and able”, “It’s only for a season” or “Perseverance is key”.

I’m here to tell you this…

The Impostor Syndrome

25 Jul

70% of all people feel like fakes at one time or another. Some 30% have it to the degree that it interferes with their work and their life. A phenomenon labeled Impostor Syndrome.

A psychological research from the early 1980’s found that many women especially skilled professionals had high levels of self-doubt. The more successful they become, the more they feel like frauds. They feel as though they’re fooling people. There’s a conflict between their self-image and external reality.

This is certainly true of some of the females I’ve spoken to who believe:

  • Am I going to be found out one day at work for not knowing enough?
  • Did I get this job by fluke?
  • Is my partner with me because I’m low maintenance and doesn’t really find me attractive?
  • Do my friends really like me or just putting up because of how long they’ve known me?

Reading a recent article in Shortlist magazine on Impostor Syndrome (IS), it confirmed my long held belief on this. I share below five practical tips on how to unlock IS and live the life you deserve. Continue reading

What really motivates you?

17 Jun

I’d like to share this animated video of a talk given by Daniel H. Pink based on his NY Times best-selling book – ‘Drive’. Quite remarkable; you just have to see it!

It’s been described as a ‘paradigm-shattering’ look at what really motivates us and how we can use that knowledge to work smarter and live better.

“Leap and the net will appear” ~ Zen Saying

This saying has its origins in the ‘Zen’ school of thought, which means ‘meditation’ in Japanese. So it’s quite apt for this weekly series of musings. The quotes are handpicked from various sources with a view to apply their knowledge and insight. I hope they inspire as well as broaden your horizon. Continue reading

The Secret We All Know

20 May

A few days ago a friend of mine carefully handed me a DVD in a manner that suggested that she was the first to discover fire and was now passing on the secret recipe. I had heard a lot about the life changing effects of this particular DVD and so drove home with a little more gusto than usual and after making some coco I jumped into the sofa, turned down the lights and got ready to watch THE SECRET.

No, The Secret is nothing sordid; it is a film / documentary released in 2006 by Rhonda Byrne. The Aussie screenwriter soon followed it up with what became a very successful novel of the same title. Soon she was writing more mini guides which aim to help people live “The Secret” on a daily basis. Over the next two years she milked the genre for all it was worth with more books, appearing on Radio, TV and in magazines where she told the world the formula for achieving their dreams – and all of it lay in “The Secret”.

So…what is this “Secret” then?

…and how did it capture the worlds imagination so much that it catapulted this woman from obscurity to (mini) celebrity? The DVD and books are quite long, so I will condense it for you. It basically says that human beings and [all forces in] the universe are made of energy and thus our thoughts have a direct correlation with not just ourselves, but with the very fabric of our existence. Our thoughts have a frequency, and, plainly put, what we think projects into the universe and the universe provides the means / mechanism by which we get that which our minds dwell upon. Everything that comes into our lives is only there because we have sent out the frequencies which attract them into our lives.
